LA SALA DEL
TERRITORIO
THE ROOM OF THE TERRITORY
(II century B.C. – IV century A.D.)
Villasimius
territory has given to the museum a wide range of staff
that witnesses the trade and the human activities of the
area in the last centuries despite the few scientific excavations
made, if compared to the archaeological heritage owned.
In the territory surrounding Capo Carbonara, a strategic
area for the open-sea navigation, but also for land activities,
there are signs and finds of settlements that date from
the Neolithic (about 6000-2700 B.C.) through the age of
the Nuraghi, also proved by the several, but not completely
inquired, “Giants Tombs” (Tombe dei Giganti),
till the Phoenician, Punic and Roman ages (great importance
is given to St Mary’s thermae and to the country
house next to them).
The caskets inside the room show finds coming, for the
largest part, from settlements of the Roman age (238 B.C.-456/66
A.D.). Among the many objects, it is worth to mention the
precious statue of a female figure dating back the I century
A.D. coming from St Mary’s area, while some funeral
outfits come from the areas of “Accu is Traias” and “Cruccuris”.
As usually, the objects displayed go with some explanatory
panels that help the visitors to understand their use and
the value they had for the people who made them; they are
also important to run through the historical steps of the
settlements where they have been found.
