SANTUARIO DI CUCCUREDDUS
THE ROOM OF CUCCUREDDUS’S SHRINE
(VII century B.C. – V
century A.D.)
The
room contains an important collection of finds in large
part coming from the archaeological site “Is Cuccureddus”,
a Punic settlement born in the VII century B.C. on one
of the hills that overlook the beach of “Campus”,
at Capo Carbonara (Carbonara Cape), destroyed in 540 B.C.
by the Romans and occupied by them till the Imperial age.
The large and varied quantity of finds witnesses the strategic
importance of the area in the course system of that period.
Inside, it is possible to find coins, amphorae, pots, bowls,
plates, cups and everything necessary to the inhabitants’ everyday
life.
Besides, you can find a big quantity of masks and
the reproduction of anatomic parts such as phallus, arms,
legs, ears, which formed a wide collection of votive offerings
to the local gods by the sailors that rounded “Capo
Carbonara”.
