LA SALA DEL MARE
THE ROOM OF THE SEA
(VI century B.C. – VI
century A.D.)
It is the first part of the tour and it collects a great
number of finds coming from medium-high depth recoveries,
from the III century B.C. to the age of the Byzantine trades.
In these rooms it is preserved an important collection
of amphorae, bricks and tiles still marked with the seal
that denotes their origin.
In this way it is testified
the leading role of the area of Capo Carbonara inside
the system of traffics and exchanges that characterised
the
Mediterranean since ancient times and that continued
even after the Cuccureddus’s Shrine was destroyed.
It
is also proved the fight between the two cultures, Rome
and Carthagine, when they dominated the maritime traffic.
Because of its educational importance, it is worth to
point out the presence of the reproduction of a Carthaginian
ship dating back the III century B.C. and that of an
underwater
excavation yard where you will find the tools and the
techniques used to carry out the survey and the underwater
excavations.
This section can be found in the room of the Territory
that is ideally linked to the room of the Sea.
