The Isola dei Cavoli’s wreck
The
waters around the Isle of the Cabbages keep, at a depth of
a bit more than 10 metres, the remains of a ship that the
researchers have indicated as an Aragon merchant ship coming
from Spain. The study was brought about using the information
drawn from the collected load and including, for the largest
part, a large quantity of “azulejos”, typical
tiles produced in the area of Valencia and probably addressed
to decorate the palace of a famous noble family from Palermo.
Among the objects survived to the wreck,
dating back approximately 1450, several guns and munitions,
typical amphorae and kitchenware
of that period painted with different drawings, and the
anchor of the ship have also been collected. It is also necessary
to remember that the wreck, thanks to its accessibility,
was largely sacked in the past years before the archaeological
survey carried out by the drivers who explored the shallow
waters around the isle.
